Oil Pulling seems to be all the rage this year but does oil pulling really work? Based on hundreds of others testimonials and reviews it appears to have certain benefits that could help you. However, there really hasn’t been any scientific research or medical research depicting oil pulling as a reliable option for people with certain health ailments. My best advice would be to try oil pulling yourself and see if you notice a difference. Oil Pulling also known as Oil Swishing is an ancient practice of putting oil in your mouth, like coconut oil or olive oil, and swishing it around for around 15-20 minutes. The purpose of doing this is to clean your teeth and gums and to remove any harmful bacteria that is present in your mouth. Think of it as a natural form of mouthwash that is more of a Ayurveda approach. It is also believed to help with other health concerns like diabetes, asthma, or inflammation.
How to Oil Pull Correctly
Now that you decided to try oil pulling, you need to know how to oil pull correctly. It’s actually extremely easy to do and here are the proper steps involved.
- Use 1 to 2 teaspoons of oil in your mouth – The most popular oil used for this process is Coconut Oil. A Good Organic Coconut Oil should do the trick but you can also try oil pulling with sesame oil, ghee butter, sunflower oil, or olive oil.
- Swish around your mouth for 15-20 minutes – Timing is important with oil pulling and you want to keep it around the 20 minute range for full effect. This is also the part where your face will look the funniest so make sure to take a selfie while doing this and post it on instagram.
- Spit the oil out – Do not under any circumstances swallow this oil. Even though the oil you are using is probably safe to digest, the bacteria from your gums and teeth will be mixed into this concoction. Spit it out into the sink or wherever you feel comfortable.
- Rinse your mouth out – The taste in your mouth will probably be unfavorable so make sure you rinse or mouth out with water.

This is the great question we are all wondering, does oil pulling work? This is a tough one to answer because there are thousands of people who stand by with their opinion that it actually works for them. While there really isn’t any scientific or medical research, at least that I can find at the moment, there is some benefits that claim to be associated with the act of oil pulling. Let’s talk about the claims and see if there is any truth to them.
- Whitens Teeth – Many people who have tried oil pulling said they noticed an immediate change in color of their teeth. Some even stated they noticed whiter teeth after the very first use. One person wrote “…noticed my teeth were whiter immediately after the first time…“.
- Strengthens Teeth & Gums – There isn’t any research I could find that makes this statement a fact however multiple people claim it helps strengthen their teeth and their gums. Like I mentioned above, don’t expect an amazing change in your dental health and don’t stop going to your dentist. Think of oil pulling as an effective alternative to using mouthwash. A review from one person stated “…after 3 days, no blood in the sink after spitting out post-brushing…“.
- Prevents Cavities – I’d say this could possibly be true but it’s no different than regular dental maintenance like brushing your teeth and using mouthwash. Once again, make sure you keep getting your regular checkups with the dentist to make sure your oral health is on par.
- Helps with Acne – This is a hit or miss because there is so many factors when it comes to acne. I could see this working for acne if it truly helps clear out the harmful bacteria in your mouth but we can’t be certain until some research is released.
Now the benefits I mentioned above are actually plausible. There seems to be some benefits from doing this for 20 minutes or so and your best bet is to try it yourself for a week and see if you notice a difference. Here comes the best part, the ridiculous claims that come along with oil pulling. Here are the most outrageous, and most scrutinized claims when it comes to doing the oil pull.
- Cures Hangovers – Sounds awesome but I can’t imagine being in a well lit bathroom trying to do this after a night of binge drinking.
- Helps you Sleep – I don’t even understand the premise of this claim, how would swishing coconut oil around your mouth help you sleep?
- Increases Sexual Health – The only way this is going to help you in the bedroom is if it is used somewhere else…
- Clears Sinuses – Absolutely no research saying this is true. Maybe if you accidentally get some up your nose while swishing.
- Detoxifies your Blood – Unless you have a cut in your mouth, I seriously doubt oil pulling can extract toxins from your blood. How could swishing around oil in your mouth get pass the membrane?
Those claims directly above are highly unlikely. Depending on what health issue your having or trying to prevent, I suggest you try it yourself and see if your body reacts to it in a positive way. Every one is different so what might work for you, might not work for others and vice versa.

If you want a solid alternative to mouthwash or other dental hygiene procedures, oil pulling might be your best bet. All you do is swish oil around your mouth for 20 minutes, spit it out, then enjoy your shiny new white teeth and clean mouth.
